FAQ+

Why do you write poetry?

Writing is therapeutic for me. If something is on my mind, or if I’m going through a hard time, I write, and it makes me feel better. Also, when others share their stories with me, it inspires me to write about it. I chose to write poetry because I enjoy the challenge of searching for the best words to convey thoughts and images in a poetic and concise manner. If ideas pop into my head, I jot them down or take notes in my cell phone then revisit them in an attempt to transform ideas into poetry.

How does your background influence your writing?

The combination of art and auditing (phone calls) in my background causes me to pay attention to detail and look at things from different angles, visually and mentally. The poet in me attempts to translate images into words on a blank page. I’ve always been a “busy bee” and participated in a variety of activities, therefore I have many experiences to pull inspiration from.

Do you always include a photo with your poems?

I am constantly taking photos and videos on my phone therefore I often choose a photo to accompany my poems, but not always. I’m considering creating artwork for my poems that touch upon themes such as loss, resentment, sleeplessness, and motivation.

How can I find information about your band?

My band, Carmen & the Renegade Vigilantes, also known as CRV, plays country/rock music in Southern California. Information about my band can be located at www.CRVband.net

MY STORY

I currently live in Southern California with my husband. By day, I audit phone calls and chats for a health insurance company. When I'm not working, I manage my band and perform local country and rock gigs.  I sing lead and harmony, in addition to playing percussion and flue. I began playing flute in fourth grade and learned to play mandolin and ukulele as an adult. I take my dad's words to heart that I can do anything I put my mind to!

I enjoy writing poetry and song lyrics. Sometimes ideas hit me right before bed, so I either jot them down on a notepad by my bed or add notes to my cell phone.  I learned the hard way that if I don't write them down, I won't remember the ideas! I return to my notes to flesh them out and revise them. I currently have over 1000 notes in my cell phone, so I better get busy!

My favorite hobbies are gardening, photography and art.  I also love to watch and feed hummingbirds - I have 28 feeders to prove it! My fascination with hummingbirds drives me to learn more about them. I read about them, plant flowers they like, draw them, write about them, and even try to talk to them! It's fair to say that I'm obsessed!
